‘AI-based Zen painting of stock market’ is an attempt to reinterpret the contemporary world of financial capitalism by reinterpreting stock price charts as ethereal landscapes. All of the landscapes depicted in this work are AI-generated based on stock price charts of real companies.

Landscape painting is a minimalist art form that attempts to express the world using only lines drawn in ink. Rather than depicting landscapes as they are, it aims to represent an ideal world in which people are in harmony with nature. It is a representative form of Oriental art that embodies the transience of time, the beauty of the ethereal in the harshness of nature, and simplicity in the elimination of superfluous things as much as possible.

Capitalism, which was established in Western society through the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, is now sweeping the world and involving every human being on the planet. The price movements of charts continue to influence the lives of each and every one of us, not only investors, but also businesspeople and even people in our daily lives. Conversely, our lives are economic activities that also influence price movements.

We thought that we could reinterpret financial capitalism by looking at stock price charts in the spirit of landscape Zen painting. In econophysics, it is said that the market price movements that emerge in the midst of human emotions can be interpreted as a kind of physical phenomenon. Both stock price charts and landscape paintings attempt to condense and express the state of the world as a whole with simple lines.

Now, by using generative AI, which was created through technological innovation, it is possible to view stock prices through landscape Zen paintings. In this work, every person’s every move becomes a stroke of the brush. ‘AI-based Zen painting of stock market’ is a participatory art in which all human beings are unconditionally involved, just as in capitalism.
